Worthing Vegan Food Bank - Providing Good Quality Vegan Produce To Those In Need
The latest addition to #ProjectPlantbase is multi-award-winning, volunteer-led Worthing Vegan Food Bank. A charitable organization that are paving the way in vegan-friendly food aid
The award-winning not-for-profit food bank is run by volunteers and caters to all vegan-compatible dietary requirements. Pia and Nathaniel, who run the charity organization, discovered there was a real need for food banks that were able to cater nutritional yet delicious food for everyone no matter their restrictive diet in terms of not wanting to consume animal products or meat.
Their weekly food parcel service is entirely volunteer-led and relies 100% on donations made by local, kind-hearted people and small local businesses. Donations include in-date food and hygiene products such as deodorant, soaps, toothpaste, and more. The services offered by the Worthing Vegan Food Bank are mostly used to support people facing short-term difficulties. All food parcels are 100% vegan and cruelty-free. Not wanting anyone to be left out and go hungry, they even cater to specific dietary intolerances and allergies such as gluten or nuts.
More than 50% of the food that is given out at the charitable vegan food bank in Worthing is fresh produce. With items such as fruits, nuts, loaves of bread and vegetables making a regular appearance in the food parcels. As well as making sure everyone, who is in need, is provided with good quality food, the local food bank, places high importance on the nutritional content of the weekly food parcel. Stating: ‘We aim to provide every beneficiary with the highest possible standard of a healthy, balanced and nutritiously complete diet.’
The organization was only founded 1 year ago and is responsible for keeping so many families and individuals fed and supported in these tough times. After launching in March of 2020, the charity has been volunteer-led from the onset. Having businesses and individuals alike donating all kinds of food, including fresh produce to their initial drop-in, donate and claim boxes across Worthing town. Since then, just like the rest of the nation, Worthing has been through several lockdowns.
This caused the Founders of the Vegan Food Bank to move and operate their main hub out of their own private residency for over half of the year. Despite the challenges and struggles that this disruption naturally brought on, they took their efforts even further. By launching a donation-based parcel-delivery service; an anti-food-waste takeaway scheme and regular free ‘Food on the Table’ handout events.
Outside of lockdown restrictions, the charitable organization regularly hosts their quickly-becoming-famous, ‘Food on the Table’ events where they set up tables upon tables of Vegan Food. Which includes fully cooked meals as well as sandwiches and snacks. These events are held in easy-to-reach locations across Worthing. Whilst these events are predominantly set for the homeless community, no one is excluded, and the events are open to anyone and everyone who is in need of a meal to grab and enjoy.
Worthing Vegan Food Bank is a part of the magnificent Adur and Worthing food bank network and works closely with several other local food relief services. This collaboration with other organizations has inspired the team to think even bigger. They have are now in the process of building a UK-wide vegan food bank support network that sets out to encourage open experience change to help both existing and new food banks alike.
The first quarter of 2021 has seen a significant spike in families contacting the Vegan Food Bank for support. The team is only expecting the demand for their well-needed services to increase, due to Brexit and the effects of the ongoing pandemic. Since moving their charity operation to a new location they now have the opportunity to expand and add to their offerings. The team Worthing Vegan Food Bank, who now operates out of St. Mary of the Angels Church say they are confident and hopeful for the next 12 months as, they aim to take on the battle of fighting waste in the current food provision systems, reducing and eliminating plastics and sourcing an even more diverse selection of produce for families in need.
