Root Kitchen was launched in January 2021 in the UK by Rishma Remtulla and David Beaver. The idea came in late 2019 when Rishma was suffering from fatigue and immunity based health issues for some years; she was subsequently diagnosed with M.E., as she comments: “I was diagnosed with ME in 2019 and whilst looking at natural ways to control the condition all the research I did overwhelmingly pointed to adopting a plant-based diet”.  After trailing her ideal plant-based meal routine, she realised there were very few convenient, nutritious and affordable options for people like her, so she took to the kitchen and started creating.

The plant-based market in the UK is one of the fastest-growing globally, with 1 in 3 consumers actively looking to reduce their meat consumption in 2020 with 16% of ready meals in the UK being plant-based, rising from just 3% in 2018. The initial Root Kitchen range of meals includes ten plant-based twists on traditional cuisine from around the world, ranging from meat-free, wholesome and Italian inspired Aubergine Al Forno to a delicious version of the nation’s favourite dish, Tofu Tikka Masala!

Rishma was inspired by her mother Laila Remtulla MBE, who started a ready meal business from her kitchen table in 1986. The company grew to a company that currently employs more than 350 people, supplying ready meals to major UK retailers and foodservice. As she explains: “I’ve worked in Product Development for my family business for over 14 years, and saw an opportunity to create a range of products that make it accessible for as many people as possible to have something healthy, delicious and plant-based in their freezer for when they are short on time or feeling too lazy to cook.”

Initially launching as a direct to consumer delivered service, customers can build a box of chef-prepared, frozen plant-based meals that are delivered by carbon-neutral courier. Root Kitchen’s Co-Founder, David Beaver, adds “Whilst we will initially be launching as a direct to consumer brand we have the infrastructure to make these meals on a large scale with our chefs cooking from scratch in small batches, using fresh ingredients as you would at home and see Root Kitchen meals as a branded alternative to supermarket own label at a price point that is accessible to everyone.”

Furthermore, Root Kitchen guarantees sustainability and local sourcing: “We have well-established relationships with some amazing, local suppliers who can provide us with amazingly fresh ingredients. We don’t use any artificial colours or preservatives and also try to source our ingredients from as local to us as possible, not only is it good to support our local economy but it ensures that vegetables’ journey from farm to fork is as short as possible.”

1feed2 - #ProjectplantbaseRoot Kitchen also strives to spread the positive impact of their business beyond the shores of the UK, and whilst researching the concept we were introduced to the guys at One Feeds Two, an amazing charity that give nutritious school meals to children living in some of the poorest places in the world. From the start, we have joined forces with One Feeds Two meaning that for every Root Kitchen meal you buy through our website, a school meal is donated.

Noodles - #ProjectplantbaseFinally, the brand has found innovative ways to reduce its carbon footprint to a maximum. Their boxes are made of recycled denim insulation, cardboard trays and sleeves are fully recyclable, with the box and insulation also being biodegradable. Root Kitchen goes even further and has set up a free returns scheme for these, just contact us and we will email you a Collect+ label to send your packaging back to us.

Root Kitchen ready meals are available to order on the company’s website www.rootkitchen.uk and online supermarkets The Vegan Kind and Frozenly. Offering an environmentally friendly and convenient solution, all meals are packaged in recyclable packaging and shipped using a carbon-neutral courier.
